Box Hair Color…Not The Solution!

So here we are sitting in the middle of this Corvid-19 mess.  All salons are shut down and you’re stuck with 2 inches of what in the world new growth is this!  It’s not just a Coronavirus Pandemic, it’s a Hair Pandemic!  You need a color and that box color is all up in your ear.  “Come get me.  You know you need me.  Girl, I’m the only one that won’t let you down.  I got that fix!”

STOP

PUT THE BOX COLOR DOWN AND READ THIS FIRST!

While our hair stylists are in the same corner as everyone else through this time. The shop is temporarily shut down and we cannot physically save you.  Yet we still stand firm when it comes to box color.  We are not against people doing their own hair.  We are, however, against unhealthy, hay in a horse’s mouth, rat chewed up hair to save a few dollars.  But I’m not saving a dollar.  I am here stuck at home having to defend my hair for myself because of Coronavirus.  Yes, you’re right, AND there is STILL A MUCH better way.

Here are a few facts about box color and professional color.

As a professional hairstylist for over 20 years and a professional hair colorist of over 15 years, substantially, there is no difference between box hair color and professional hair color.  The main base chemicals to create hair color is the same.  No matter what expert or beauty professional tells you.  Factually there is no difference in the making.  There are some professional hair color brands that have been specially patented dyes that you can’t get anywhere else and some of the professional brands have a superior conditioning system for better hair condition.  Nonetheless, the legitimate difference is in the APTITUDE the person has when deciding and applying hair color.

LANGUAGE

There are 10,000,000 shades of color that the human eye can see. In the hair color world, manufacturer companies supply us with at least 100 – 150 shades worldwide.  Store-bought box colors only use MAYBE 20 different shades as a whole.  Professional hair salons use all 150.  A hair colorist can and will try to formulate up to least 500 different ways or more as a whole.  Box hair colors are made based on the popular and basic colors that they feel you want.  However, all 20 of those shades are created with one formula to fit millions of heads. Color is not a one size fit all.  We can force it and pretend like it is.  Answer this question, have you been wearing the same size clothes and shoes that you have since you were 12? Just like everything else we can force something to make it fit, box hair color will not fit for a lot of us.  Hair coloring has a lot of factors in order to receive a full achievement. Your natural hair color, the porosity of your hair, natural undertone, the elasticity, medical condition, gray hair, and this is just to name a few factors into what a human actually has going on with their hair strands.  I wish life came with a magic wand with abracadabra, but it doesn’t, and box hair color doesn’t fit everyone.

CONDITION

When it comes to the condition of your hair and wanting hair color, this is known as just one aspect of a consultation. Creating a hair color formula and coloring your hair consists of a few proper facts such as conditioning systems and treatment.  Box color does have some type of conditioning system, however again, box haircoloring is made for a one size fit all.  It is mostly average for healthy hair. Box hair color doesn’t know what measures your hair needs for conditioning treatment.  Some of us may need strength protection or moisture protection.  You and the box hair color doesn’t know the best hair conditions required before applying the dye which can be another reason for unsatisfactory results. But in a salon and with a professional hair colorist can provide you all the treatments required to reach the best conditions using conditioning products before, during and after your hair coloring so that you would get the best and flawless look. A professional hair colorist will also be able to provide you the proper use of after color products to lock and secure your hair dye and boost up the shine of your hair.

FORMULATION

Professional hair color is mixed according to the individual. When you tell your hairstylist (or yourself) you want an Ash blonde or matte chocolate brown, you end up with exactly that. The developer needed for your color is also picked based on the integrity and strength of your hair.  Boxed hair color is like picking one size fits all, that is like going to the store and picking a pair of shoes that have sizes of small, medium and large, and we’re not talking about a pair of slippers. Box hair color companies create a formula that the color only has the basic materials and chemicals for a standard color. It’s not designed for different hair types, yet satisfied for the average hair type, which doesn’t really satisfy everyone’s hair.  The result is unpredictable and can give an unpleasant result. So, when you pick up an Ashy or chocolate brown box to cover your blonde hair, don’t be surprised when you shampoo and rinse, you towel dry of yellow, green, blue or orange hair. Now don’t get me wrong professional hair color doesn’t come with already made formulas.  It takes a professional to know the knowledge to create a formula for every client.  Every client and every color have more than one formula.  You can WANT to stick to the same color for the next 30 to 40 years because you love it, that’s great! However, a professional hair colorist knows they will have 5-10 different formulas to keep that SAME COLOR, for every time your hair and body changes.
